Control slugs in new pasture
Slugs can cause a major reduction in seedling grass and clover populations in new pasture. Control measures are effective but do require a little forward planning.
Pastures and crops are susceptible to slug damage, especially during the establishment phase. Slugs feed on seeds and emerging shoots, damaging or killing them both before and after emergence.
Slug populations are usually highest in the spring, decline over the drier summer months and increase after rain in autumn.

Direct drilled pastures or crops are at a greater risk from slug damage during establishment than those established via cultivation. When direct drilling, slug control measures should be considered as part of the programme. At the very least an attempt to assess the slug population should be made before seed establishment.
Prior to drilling, lay out some boards or damp sacks in the paddock and after a few days lift and check for slugs. If an average of 2-4 slugs are found under each board/sack, then control measures are required.
Control methods and timing
SlugOut® slug bait is the product of choice. This product has an edible coating that is very palatable to slugs. The active ingredient is metaldehyde, which is highly effective in controlling slugs by causing irreversible damage to their mucous cells. SlugOut will remain highly effective and mould free in all weather conditions for long periods of time.
The other factor which makes SlugOut superior is that the baits are small in size and much better ground coverage can be achieved than with other larger slug baits. This is important because slugs find their food mainly by chance and the greater the density of baits, the more likely slugs are to find and feed on them.
Slug Out can be broadcast prior to drilling, or direct drilled.
Use rates
Broadcast (preferred option)
Use 10-15kg/ha. Use the high rate when slug numbers are high. Broadcast evenly over the area to be planted or band along plant/drill rows. Apply through most granule or fertiliser applicators. Mixing with fertiliser or anything else that may have a detrimental effect on the palatability of the baits is not recommended.
Drilling With Seed
Drill 10kg/ha into furrow with seed. Use only in situations where the seed drill leaves a distinct open slot.
For best results:
- When broadcasting SlugOut it is important to get the baits on and reduce slug numbers before they get a chance to move into the drill slots. If this happens they will probably not come back out to feed.
- SlugOut baits have good resistance to rain, however their activity will be maximised by delaying application if rain is imminent.
- Stock withholding is not generally a problem, given that most SlugOut is used prior to establishment of new pastures. However, stock should be withheld from the treated area for seven days.
